Quilt Notes: Summer RoadTrips and Creative Moments - 014 0526

There’s something about late‑May sunlight that makes everything feel a little brighter around the edges. The days stretch out, the air warms up, and suddenly life pulls you outside — into the garden, onto the road, into the rhythm of summer.

Yesterday, Dave and I took a little road trip, the kind we’ve done for years. Nothing fancy, just the two of us, windows down, the fields rolling by, and our usual soundtrack: a mix of 60s and 70s pop‑rock, a little opera, maybe a musical if we’re feeling dramatic. It’s our version of summer freedom.

And because I’m me… I have a fabric swatch book in my lap.

I’ve been choosing colors for something small and joyful coming soon — the little kits I’ve hinted at but haven’t fully revealed yet. (Yes, those fabrics you saw peeking out in my stories were part of it.) There’s something magical about choosing colors while the world is moving past your window. The music, the motion, the sunlight — it all loosens the creative knots and lets ideas drift in. For me, it is a kind of dream state, my happy place, that one perfect moment.

Road Trip

It reminded me how creativity doesn’t disappear in summer. It just changes shape.

Some days it looks like a full studio session. Some days it looks like choosing fabrics in the passenger seat. Some days it’s a spark that hits while you’re watering zinnias or sitting at the park or listening to a favorite song.

Summer has its own rhythm, and I’ve learned to let my art form travel with me instead of waiting for the “perfect” moment. Quilting isn’t something I step away from when life gets busy — it’s something that threads itself through the season in small, beautiful ways.

And since summer has us all on the move, I thought I’d show you how I pack when I take Build A Quilt on the road. No giant cases, no heavy boxes — just my little IKEA Silang bundle. One photo shows it folded up and ready to travel, and the other shows everything tucked neatly inside: my cutters, ruler, press pad, clips, and whatever fabrics I’m playing with that day, my tablet with all the written patterns and a usb stick with the digital files. It’s simple, lightweight, and honestly one of my favorite things about BAQ — you can take your creativity anywhere without hauling half your studio with you.

And it made me wonder: What makes you feel like you’re living your best summer life?

Is it a road trip with the windows down? A picnic at the park? A quiet hour on the porch with hand‑stitching? Music drifting through the house while you cut fabric? A favorite drink in hand while you dream up your next project or take notes from a new quilting video?

Whatever it is, I hope you let yourself have it. Let your life feed your art. Let your creativity breathe a little in the warm air.

And yes… some of those fabrics I was choosing on the road yesterday? They’re for something tiny, sweet, and fun that’s coming soon. I can’t wait to show you.

Quilt Life Beautiful...
