Quilt Notes - "Anyone Can Quilt" 019 0626

Hello Friends -

It’s a quiet Sunday morning here, and after a full week in the studio, I’ve been thinking a lot about what Build A Quilt is really about. Yes, BAQ is a technique, a method, a set of digital files and diagrams — but at its core, it’s a mission. Many of you have heard the story of how my embroidery friends would not quilt with me unless they could quilt with their embroidery machines. Well, that may have been the start, but honestly I have always wanted quilting to be accessible, joyful, and stress‑free for anyone who wants to make patchwork. And this week, I saw that mission come to life in the best possible way.

On Friday, Dave made his very first BAQ segment.

Build A Quilt - From a Newbies point of view
Beginning with Build A Quilt

He sat down with the digital files, followed the steps, and stitched his way through a segment with the same calm precision that BAQ is designed to give beginners. And the best part was watching his face as he realized what he had just done. He looked at the finished piece in the hoop, held it up, and said he had been nervous for no reason — because his segment looked exactly like mine. That moment of surprise and pride was pure joy. He’s brand‑new to patchwork, but BAQ gave him the confidence and clarity to succeed on his very first try. It was a reminder of why I built this method: quilting truly can be for everyone.

This week also brought something bright and celebratory into the studio: the Independence Quilt is officially complete and published. The demo video is live, and the full class video will roll out in the next couple of days — just in time for the holiday week.

And honestly? This quilt feels like a little firework of its own.

It’s bold, geometric, and full of movement — perfect if you want to stitch something festive for the Fourth. But it’s also one of those designs that transforms completely depending on your colors. Make it in classic red, white, and blue… or go totally off‑script:

  • sunny citrus colors for a summer pop

  • soft florals inspired by your garden

  • cool ocean blues

  • warm autumn tones

  • or even a modern grayscale

It’s one of those patterns that doesn’t boss you around — it just shows up beautifully in whatever palette you love.

And with most of the country heading into a serious heat wave this week — temperatures climbing past 105° in some areas — it’s the perfect time to stay inside, keep cool, and plan a little quilting time. Pour yourself some Earl Grey iced tea (see the recipe in last week’s blog) or your favorite cold beverage, and settle in with a project that feels good. If you’re looking for something festive or simply joyful, the Independence Quilt is a wonderful way to celebrate the season — whether you stitch it in patriotic colors, sunny citrus tones, or the soft florals of your favorite garden blooms.

So that’s my Sunday reflection: quilting is truly for everyone. BAQ is here to make it easier. And whether you’re stitching your first segment or starting a brand‑new Independence Quilt, I hope this week gives you a little space to create something beautiful.
