Hello Friends -
As I’ve been out on the flower farm this week — hands in the dirt, coffee cooling somewhere nearby, just letting my mind wander the way it does when I’m working — I kept coming back to this idea of building skills little by little. The same way the plants grow: steady, patient, one layer at a time. And I thought, you know what? That’s exactly what we’re doing together in the SkillBuilder series. So I wanted to chat about that in this week’s post and share a bit of what’s to come in this month's SkillBuilder block.
Every month in the SkillBuilder series, we take one quilt block and use it as a focused playground — a place to explore a single aspect of design without the overwhelm of trying to learn everything at once. Think of it as a slow, steady layering of skills: color one month, value the next, then movement, balance, proportion, or placement. Each block becomes a stepping stone toward a quilt that feels intentional, cohesive, and deeply yours.

What I love about the SkillBuilder series is that each month stands on its own. Every block is its own little design lab — a chance to explore one idea deeply without needing to follow a strict sequence. But every so often, two months line up in a way that creates a natural progression. That’s exactly what’s happening right now. Last month, we focused on The Center Swap and this week’s new block picks up that thread in a fresh way. It’s not a continuation by design — it’s more like a happy creative echo that lets you take what you learned and stretch it just a bit further.

This month’s block (coming out this week!) is intentionally structured to help you apply last month’s lesson in a slightly more complex or nuanced way. You’ll recognize echoes of what you’ve already practiced — but with a twist that nudges you forward. It’s the kind of progression that makes you suddenly realize, “Oh… I get this now.”
Skill Building isn’t about perfection. It’s about growth, confidence, and the joy of watching your design instincts sharpen month after month. By the time we reach the end of this year, you’ll see how each block can contribute to a piece of your creative quilting evolution.
I can’t wait to show you this month’s block and see how you interpret it. It’s a good one — and it’s going to make last month’s work click in a whole new way.
Quilt Life Beautiful,
Diana
