Hello Quilting Friends -
You did it, you completed the 24 Block Challenge. It took six months, but let's think about everything we learned together. Color, an ongoing area of study for us all. How to mix and match the Basic 6 segments in the BAQ Library sets and segment placement, which alone creates the story of the quilt at layout. Congratulations!!!!
This week we arrived at the moment in every quilt project when the blocks are finished, the cutting table is cleared, and the real magic begins. It’s the moment you step back, breathe, and start laying things out. And every time I reach this stage, I’m reminded that layout isn’t just a technical step — it’s where the quilt starts to tell its story. Is this a figural quilt, a curated color collection or a simple sampler?

We spend so much time choosing fabrics, cutting pieces, and creating blocks that it’s easy to think the “hard part” is done. But the layout is where personality shows up. It’s where rhythm, balance, and movement start to form. It’s where a quilt shifts from a collection of blocks into something whole.
This week, as I played with different arrangements — sashing, no sashing, borders, no borders — I realized again how much these small decisions change the entire mood of a quilt. A simple grid feels calm and classic. Add sashing, and suddenly each block has room to breathe. Remove it, and the quilt becomes bold and energetic. Borders can frame everything with intention, or you can skip them and let the blocks spill right to the edge for a more modern feel. I personally, don't care for sashing, but it can be so important if you want to frame the blocks or if you want to enlarge the overall quilt. So, I never ignore it completely.

None of these choices are right or wrong. They’re just different ways of shaping the story.
And that’s what I love most about layout work: it’s a conversation. You place a block, step back, adjust, try again. You listen to what the quilt wants to become. Sometimes it surprises you. Sometimes it confirms what you already knew. But it always teaches you something about your own creative instincts.
So if you’re in that stage — blocks finished, layout ahead — give yourself time to play. Move things around. Try the option you think won’t work. Let the quilt talk back a little. Because layout isn’t just arranging pieces. It’s discovering the quilt inside the blocks.

There is a special tool to help with this process inside the Quilt Layout package in the 24 Block Challenge Library at the website. https://www.mybuildaquilt.com It is a layout template. print as many as you like for your personal use. The accompanying video will show you how to use the template. https://youtu.be/i8Y3Ob9DwnUAnd
This is where your creativity starts to spark.
I look forward to seeing how you choose to use the blocks from the Challenge or how you use the Basic Segment Libraries to create a quilt from scratch. Until then, enjoy your quilting time be it a lot or a little and....
Quilt Life Beautiful...
Diana
